dc.description.abstract | Traditional medicine is an important healthcare option formore than half of the worlds population today. Among theancient health legacies, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)is widely practiced in East Asia, from Japan, Korea, China,Taiwan to Vietnam, and those with ethnic Chinese popu-lation like Thailand and Malaysia. From the perspective ofTCM, it adopts a holistic approach to examine, assess andtreat patient as a complex entity, while taking into accountof the macro- and micro-environmental determinants ofhealth.Another ancient yet living tradition in Asia is the IndianSystems of Medicine (ISM) including Ayurveda, Yoga &Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (also knownas AYUSH). The Indian subcontinent is home to diverseethnic groups, beliefs, cultures, languages and healthpractices, and thus accommodates a number of medicinalsystems originated in and outside the region. Similar toTCM, ISM takes into consideration physical, psychological, philosophical, ethical and spiritual well-being of in-dividuals. Social acceptance and affordability are keyfactors that determine a higher utilization of ISM amonglow-income households in India. Recognizing ISM as part ofthe national healthcare network, the government of Indiahas established formal institutions such as hospitals, col-leges and research units around the country to mainstreamISM care. | en_US |
